It was while watching my partner play Hogwarts Legacy that it hit me: what a mess the menu was!
So I decided to analyze the whole thing and redesign it from my UX point of view.

Pain points

9 sections is a lot for a menu, especially as some items are poorly positioned, such as the map which is highly used but placed at the top right.

The player level indicator seems to be clickable, but is not. There are two reasons for this: it’s aligned with the other clickable elements, and it has a drop shadow.

The challenge section is an extra motivation for players to continue the game (achievers and explorers). But since it’s not as important as the main quests, this section shouldn’t be any bigger than the others.

The difference between Gear and Inventory is a bit confusing. So are Collections and Challenges (when you know what they contain).

The Owl Post is very not important here and could be added in another section (my partner opened it like twice).

Flow proposal

Primary level placed in the middle for easy access. The Quests are the most important section for the players. This is the main players motivation. It gathers also the Owl posts and notes related to the quests.

Primary level placed in the middle for easy access. The Map is the most opened section by the players. It has to be quickly accessible.

Secondary level placed on top. The Inventory gathers all the items picked up and needed for the game : equipments, resources and beasts.

Secondary level placed on top. The Talents section is useful but more occasionally than the other sections.

Last level on bottom. The Challenges are the players second motivation to continue the game, but it comes after the main quests and tools related. The Collections are now integrated in the Challenges.

Very last level on bottom. The Settings are not very useful for the player and doesn’t had to be easily accessed.

The Inventory

The aim of this page is to take a quick look at the main specs of the inventory:

The Beasts section informs about the number of slots used by the players beasts. The Gear section informs about the health, defense and offense stats of the players equipments. The Resources informs about the coins earned.

Can I capture this beast? Yes I have some slots left. Is my equipment efficient against this enemy? No I need better stats. Can I buy this item? No I don’t have enough coins.

The Challenges

The Field Guide Pages challenge is now integrated in the Exploration section, as it demands exploration to find them, as well as the Revelio Pages collection.

A new section appears: the Collectible, gathering the Wand Handles, the Brooms, the Tools, the Ingredients, the Appearances and the Traits.

The Combat section is completed by the former Enemies collection. And the Conjurations and Beasts collections are integrated in the Room of Requirement section.
